Chimpanzees are a species of great ape and the closest living relative to humans. Unlike other members of the primate family, chimpanzees do not have a tail. Although they often use all four limbs for mobility, they can walk upright like humans. They also have opposable thumbs and can use tools. Coarse black or dark brown fur covers their bodies and each chimpanzee exhibits its own, unique personality.

Housing a Chimpanzee
Chimpanzees are highly social animals and should be kept with other chimpanzees. The pen should have an enclosed top to prevent the animal from escaping. Grass or other plant material should cover the floor. Chimpanzees like to nest in trees and swing from branches so they do well if they have trees, swings, or play equipment in their enclosures. Additionally, the enclosure should protect the animals from extreme weather conditions.
Chimpanzee Diet
Chimpanzees are omnivores and will eat insects, eggs, meat, birds, as well as honey, fruit, and vegetables. In the wild, chimpanzees spend six to eight hours a day foraging for food. They should be fed small portions several times a day rather than one large meal because this more closely mimics their eating habits in the wild.
Chimpanzee in Captivity
Chimpanzees are intelligent and active and require a lot of enrichment. Chimpanzees are used to hunting for their food so seeds, nuts, and raisins that are scattered in the grass or ground cover of their enclosure will force them to seek out their treats, occupy the animal for hours. They can be taught sign language, can learn to play games, and master various tricks.
Breeding Chimpanzees
Chimpanzees reach sexual maturity between 10 and 13 years old. Female chimpanzees reproduce every three or four years, but the mother and child remain together for at least seven years. The gestation period is about eight months. In captivity, chimpanzees can live into their sixties.
